Memories of Mrs.
Katherine Vick about the Hotel on Main Street, Auburn (1989)
Hotel still in Auburn
(March 9, 1989 - News-Democrat)
This 1910 picture below appeared in the March
2, 1989 issue of the News Democrat and on the following week, March 9, 1989 Mrs.
Katherine Vick wrote the following to the Editor of the paper. She says:
Editor:
I would like to give you a little information about the hotel in Auburn,
which was pictured in the News-Democrat on March 2. The front porches are gone,
but the hotel still stands on Main Street in Auburn. It has been converted into
small apartments and is presently owned by Jerry Wilhelm.
My in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Vick 9now deceased, owned the hotel from 1904
until 1922. The little boy in the picture is Raymond Vick (1903-1990), who is now a patient
at the Auburn Nursing Center. My husband, the late Karl Vick (1911-1979), was born at the
hotel. So were his brothers Hershel (1905-1969) and Elvis and his sister Kathleen
(1916-1948).
Mrs. Vick operated a boarding house for 'drummers' (traveling salesmen) who
came to Auburn by train. She served meals, assisted by a black cook who later
became an excellent chef in a large hotel in Louisville.
A Mr. and Mrs. Miller were the next owners of the hotel, after moving from
their farm east of Auburn. The Vick family moved to the farm, which is now my
home. The original house burned in 1943.
I hope this information will be helpful, and will bring back memories to the
older citizens of this area.
