of Hendersonville, Tenn., died at 4 p.m. June 2, 2003, at a Hendersonville nursing home.
The Butler County native was a retired automobile salesman in Russellville and Bowling Green, a former mayor of Auburn for 12 years and a member of Auburn Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Carlie Washer and Ferrye Tyree Washer. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Young Funeral Home with burial in Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife, Fannie Rosser Washer; a son, Van Washer and wife, Betty Lou, of Hendersonville; a sister, Sarah Montgomery of Auburn; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
New Board Members inducted Tuesday. January 1940. Auburn Times - Jan. 5, 1940 Three new members, elected in November to the Town Board of Trustees, were administered the oath of office at the regular monthly meeting of the body Tuesday night. Charles G. Huffines, M. A. Neal and John F. Gaines were incoming members of the board. Hansford D. Scott and W. M. Young being re-elected. O. M. Crewdson administered the oath and the session settled down to routine business. Hansford was unanimously nominated and elected by the board to serve as its chairman, opened the business division by receiving nominations and voting for, the various town offices. T. Wilson, who has held the position of clerk for the past several years and was the unanimous choice of the body to succeed himself. W. Herndon was renamed Treasurer and James C. Lyne, Russellville lawyer was retained as attorney. H. C. Hayes, who succeeded A. Elliott as Town Marshall, was re-named for that position and was also given the oath of office by Crewdson. Hayes has indicated that he is entirely familiar with the duties that this office demands, and the record established during the past two months of service in his present capacity. H. B. Carter was appointed as Superintendent of the Water Works, S. B. Eskew was named as Fire Marshall and Deck Garrett was appointed to the position of Fire Chief. Following the appointments, the chairman appointed the various committees for streets, sanitation, by-laws, etc. The ordinances were passed by the board, placing a privilege license on moving picture shows, pin-ball machines and electric victrolas. A large number of citizens attended the meeting of the board and the spirit of general understanding and co-operation prevailed.
